In 2015, Hong Kong had around 40,000 residential/composite buildings. The buildings can be divided into 3 categories: old-aged buildings (50 years and over), middle-aged buildings (aged 30-49), and young buildings (aged less than 30 years).

In 2019, Hong Kong had 5,000 out of 24,000 residential/composite buildings aged over 30 years and in dilapidated condition. It is estimated that the number of dilapidated buildings iwll reach 10,000 by 2046 if no remedial action is taken.
An effective strategy should be developed based on a comprehensive analysis of building condition in Hong Kong. A tailored strategy and method will be formulated to deal with each category of buildings.
