Green Buildings: Building an Environmentally Sustainable Future

The URA has formulated a comprehensive policy on environmental sustainability, covering six main environmental provisions, which are adopted by its development projects, with an aim to fostering a quality living environment and contributing to an environmentally sustainable future for Hong Kong. By 2020/21, 27 projects attained BEAM Platinum/ BEAM Plus Platinum/ BEAM Plus Gold Rating for their sustainable building design and sustainability performance. 

URA's six main environmental provisions cover the following areas:

Energy Efficiency
  • Energy efficiency of electrical, public area lighting, lift and escalator installations
  • Building design of high energy efficiency, e.g. sun-shading provisions, low e-glass, natural air ventilation
  • Smart air ventilation control system and water-cooled chiller system
  • Solar power system
  • Electric vehicle charging facilities
Water Conservation
  • Condensate collection system, rain water collection system for irrigation
  • Grey water re-usable system
  • Dual flushing, low volume cistern for toilets
Environmentally-friendly Building Materials
  • Materials non-damaging to ozone
  • Recycled plastic bottles and rubber tyres for outdoor flooring
  • Pre-assembled construction parts
Greening
  • Roof garden, vertical greening, landscaped open space, street planting etc.
Reduction of Construction Waste and Environmental Nuisance
  • Recycled building materials
  • Waste management plan
  • Introduction of noise mitigation measures
Facilities for Collection of Recyclable Waste
  • Domestic waste recycling collection facilities
